Making the Scene: the Midtown Y Photography Gallery
The Midtown Y Photography Gallery was founded in 1972 and, for 25 years until its closing, helped undiscovered photographers in New York break into the industry. The exhibition, held at the New York Public Library, splits up the photographers' individual works into two time periods: 1972-1982 and 1983-1996. Other features of the exhibition include a collection from various group shows at the gallery (for example Sy Rubin's photographs from his subsidized project 14th St.) and an area called "Negotiations," which describes how the gallery dealt with the rising connection between photography and modern art. Also be sure to check out the "Screening Room," which, in greater detail, highlights the creations of the Midtown Y photographers. The exhibition is open until September 16, 2007.
